All of our Community Learning courses are delivered through our Community Learning Programme and are funded by Adult Learning Services LCC working in partnership with the Education and Skills Funding Agency, European Union Social Fund and the Liverpool City Region.

Basic Counselling
Basic Counselling, Monday 9th May, 4.45-8.30pm, Communiversity
The aim of this course is to offer you the opportunity to learn about basic counselling, improve self-confidence, mental well-being, develop self-awareness and improve communication and presentation skills. Working in groups and paired sessions, you will learn the difference between counselling, using counselling skills, and other forms of helping. What counselling isn’t, and understand the difference between empathy and sympathy. You will gain an understanding of the three main approaches to counselling; Person centred, Psychodynamic and Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) On successful completion of the course, you will have the ability to progress to a L2 Counselling qualification.

Classic Bakes and Novel Cakes
STARTING - 28/4/2022 | 4:45pm - 8:30pm | 8 weeks | Dovecot MAC
This course is suitable for beginners or the more experienced bakers. Learners will prepare and bake during the session. A choice of recipes will be decided by the learners at each session. You will learn the basics of pastry making, baking and cake decorating, food hygiene, kitchen safety and food storage. On successful completion of this course you will have the opportunity to gain a Food Hygiene certificate and progress on to a baking/cookery qualification.

Community Theatre (TBC)
If you are interested in dance and/or drama, this is the course for you, and is suitable for complete beginners or those with performance experience. The course will be delivered face to face. Working in groups, pairs and individually, you will learn how to follow a script, use body language and speech to project the correct portrayal of your role, learn and perform dance routines relevant to final performance. A t the end of the course all learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement and have the opportunity to perform to an audience in a community based setting.

Driving Theory
Start Date - Thursday 3rd March - 9:30am - 12:30pm
If you are learning to drive, but are unsure of passing your Driving Theory test, this is the course for you. Learning will be a blend of on-line and practical sessions, and aims to provide learners the opportunity to learn about Driving Theory as a prerequisite to passing the Practical Driving Test. Looking at Health & Safety of vehicles, basic maintenance, awareness of Functional Skills – distances, speeds, ICT research and IT based practice exams. On successful completion of the course, learners will be entered for their Driving Theory test; cost will be covered by AVCT.

Fluid Art
STARTING - 28/4/2022 | 4:45pm - 8:30pm | 8 weeks | Dovecot MAC
Do you have an interest in Art? If so, you will love this introduction to fluid Art. This course will teach you the basic techniques and all you need to know to go on and create beautiful and unique works of art at home. No brush required. This course is suitable for beginners or the more experienced artists who want to know more about this technique. You will learn all about colour theory, mixing ratios and also how to work on canvas. It’s all about allowing your creativity and imagination to flow through the canvas. Working individually and in groups, this course will bring out the artist in you.
At the end of the course all learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement and have the opportunity to showcase your works in a final exhibition within a community setting.
Please note: You are going to be working with acrylic paint so please wear something you don’t mind getting paint on.

ESOL For Beginners
This course is aimed at those who have no or limited understanding of speaking English, and will be delivered over 10 x 3 hour sessions, in a classroom based setting, and will provide learners with the opportunity to gain a basic understanding of speaking English, build self-confidence, and improve communication and presentation skills. Working in small groups and individually, you will learn how to introduce and talk about yourself and family, ask and follow travel directions, order and pay for shopping, order and pay for food in a restaurant. On successful completion of the course, learners will have the opportunity to progress on to English, maths, functional skills qualifications.

Wellbeing For All
This course is designed for those who are looking to improve their Health and Wellbeing. It helps to promote and reiterate the importance of good mental health and wellbeing for everyone. Difficult emotions in the face of coronavirus (COVID-19) are a natural and widespread reaction and for most will recede with time. That does not make dealing with them easy. It is an important time for all of us to look after our mental and physical health and wellbeing. This course will include a yoga based session, which is suitable for beginners or the more experienced.

Love History

Do you LOVE HISTORY as much as we do?
If so, we have a unique local history course that will keep you talking for days! Join us as we delve into Liverpool’s rich and fascinating past.
Not only will the course connect your local area to Liverpool’s growth and development, it will examine some of Liverpool’s most significant historical events, most famous, and also its most infamous characters.
We will look at Victorian Liverpool, and the rise of the merchant class. A time when Liverpool would discover enormous wealth and yet the poor were often left to perish. From a small fishing village, Liverpool rose to the second city of empire, we will look at the successes and also its sins.
We will move through the generations, discussing the people, the pride, and the place. We will look crime and punishment and how 134 people were convicted at St Georges Hall and sentenced to hang. We will re-examine the trials of some of those young men and ask the question, have things changed that much? We will look at Victorian gangs and class struggles. Including the 1911 strikes, when Liverpool, like no other city, came close to revolution. If you love Liverpool, then join us into a journey of its past. We will not leave any stone unturned….
